How do I stop msbuild from missing out files when doing a web publish?

$

I have a solution with several projects in it with dependencies. When I build the web site project, the bin folder contains a number of sub folders Some from AjaxControlToolkit.dll, some from folders generated by dependency projects. I also get the PDB files generated and copied into the bin folder.

Everything works

If I do a publish using the context menu (publish to file system) I get the same files generated

Everything works

When I do a web publish using msbuild I do NOT get the PDB files for the dependencies (but do for the web site) I do NOT get the folders copied into the bin folder

This breaks a lot of stuff.

From further investigation:

obj\Release\Package\PackageTmp\bin in the project does NOT contain the files

obj\Release\CustomerPortal.csproj.FileListAbsolute.txt DOES list the files

I do the MSBuild in 2 steps

1 -> compile in source directory At this point, all files and folders are present in the source bin folder

2 -> publish to a new folder At this point the dependent files and folders are not transferred across.

Batch File

SET MSBuild="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\msbuild.exe"
SET targetFolder=C:\Temp\Customer_Build
SET configuration=Release

%MSBUILD% "%targetBuildFolder%\Customer.CustomerPortal.sln" /t:Build /p:Configuration=%configuration%;BuildProjectReferences=true;Platform="Any CPU" >> "%targetFolder%\build_all.log"

%MSBUILD% "%targetBuildFolder%\CustomerPortal\CustomerPortal.csproj" /t:WebPublish /p:PublishUrl=%targetBuildFolder%\_B_MyCustomer\;VisualStudioVersion=11.0;WebPublishMethod=FileSystem;Configuration=%configuration%;BuildProjectReferences=true;DeployOnBuild=True;PackageAsSingleFile=False;PrecompileBeforePublish=False;ExcludeGeneratedDebugSymbol=False;Platform="AnyCPU" >> "%targetFolder%\build_all.log"

Publish Profile XML

<ProjectToolsVersion="4.0"xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"><PropertyGroup><WebPublishMethod>FileSystem</WebPublishMethod><LastUsedBuildConfiguration>Debug</LastUsedBuildConfiguration><LastUsedPlatform>Any CPU</LastUsedPlatform><SiteUrlToLaunchAfterPublish/><LaunchSiteAfterPublish>True</LaunchSiteAfterPublish><ExcludeApp_Data>True</ExcludeApp_Data><publishUrl>C:\Temp\Customer_Build\Deploy\MyCustomer</publishUrl><DeleteExistingFiles>True</DeleteExistingFiles></PropertyGroup></Project>

Does anyone know a way that I can either:

1.  Specify a command line option that will allow the same behaviour for MSBUILD as the profile does or

2.  Use the profile, but be able to override the publish folder and configuration

VS2013 solution builds w/i VisStudio, but not with MSBuild from cmd line.

My WPF solution builds as expected w/i VisStudio 2013.

When I try to build from the command line:
MSBuild.exe .\EMOTM.sln  /p:Configuration=DEBUG /property:WarningLevel=1 /t:BUILD

I get the error:

"C:\work\BitBucket\emotmtimer\EMOTM.sln" (BUILD target) (1) ->
"C:\work\BitBucket\emotmtimer\EMOTM\EMOTM.csproj" (default target) (2) ->

What is VisStudio doing to make the solution build that MSBuild is not?

TFS build / deploy doesn't really deploy MSBuild Exception

Hi all,

I'm trying to get TFS 2010 and MSBUILD to deploy my website to a test server.   The build runs and displays in TFS as successful, but the deploy never actually happens.

I copied  pasted the full command line below:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\MSBuild.exe /nologo /noconsolelogger "C:\Builds\15\CP\MyBuildName\Sources\WebApplication.sln" /m:1 /fl /flp:"logfile=C:\Builds\15\CP\MyBuildName\Sources\WebApplication.log;encoding=Unicode;verbosity=detailed" /p:SkipInvalidConfigurations=true /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:MsDeployPublishMethod=WMSVC /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:AllowUntrustedCertificate=True /p:MSDeployServiceURL=https://MyWebBox:8172/msdeploy.axd /p:DeployIISAppPath=MyWebsiteName /p:UserName=something /p:Password=something /p:OutDir="C:\Builds\15\CP\MyBuildName\Binaries\\" /p:Configuration="Release" /p:Platform="Any CPU" /p:VCBuildOverride="C:\Builds\15\CP\MyBuildName\Sources\WebApplication.sln.Any CPU.Release.vsprops" /dl:WorkflowCentralLogger,"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Server.Logger.dll";"Verbosity=Detailed;BuildUri=vstfs:///Build/Build/1667;InformationNodeId=1431372;TargetsNotLogged=GetNativeManifest,GetCopyToOutputDirectoryItems,GetTargetPath;TFSUrl=http://mytfsbox:8080/tfs/Chs;"*WorkflowForwardingLogger,"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Server.Logger.dll";"Verbosity=Detailed;"

If I run this manually from the command line on my build machine, I get this error message:

MSBUILD : error MSB1025: An internal failure occurred while running MSBuild.
System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot dispose the build manager because it is not idle.
   at Microsoft.Build.Execution.BuildManager.Dispose(Boolean disposing)

If I remove everything that's underlined, the build does not crash, and deployment works.  So how can I override / prevent this setting?

How to prevent Visual Studio 2010 from being "Busy" and unresponsive for ~17 seconds when I cancel a multi-processor build?

$

When I cancel a multi-processor build (via the Build > Cancel menu item), Visual Studio 2010 usually becomes unresponsive, for as long as 17 seconds.  (I used a stop watch to time between clicking cancel and when clicking in the VS editor had any response.)  This interrupts my flow, which hurts my productivity.  I am building C++ code mainly.  The problem seems to more frequently occur when in the middle of building many cpp files simultaneously (I have 32 cores).

Sometimes the "Microsoft Visual Studio is Busy" popup even displays, and a couple times I had to use Windows Task Manager to end the Visual Studio task (but usually Visual Studio recovers on its own).  (I tried just ending all the MSBuild.exe tasks that remain running, but that didn't result in VS regaining responsiveness.)  That popup says "If you regularly encounter this delay during normal usage, please report this problem to Microsoft".  This is my report.  Please let me know if this is the appropriate place for such a report.

If anyone could help me resolve this issue I would appreciate it.  I am new to using Visual Studio 2010 (just started using it two weeks ago) and this problem has always happened since I started using it (even before I installed my ClangFormat, ViEmu, and Visual Assist plugins).

VS2012 AfterPublish for Web Application

$

We are using the One Click Publish feature in VS2012 and would like to execute some commands after the publish process has finished.

We have added the following element to our .pubxml file but this does not get fired:

<Target Name="AfterPublish" AfterTargets="MSDeployPublish">

What is the correct way of doing this in VS2012?

Deploys taking forever

$

Deploys of our Visual Studio (.NET) projects take FOREVER.

WINDOWS CLIENT
- Change server names in many places
- Publish

WEB CLIENT
- Change server names in many places
- Publish

REPORTS PROJECT
- Change server names in many places
- Publish

DATABASE CHANGES
- Compare schema
- Prepare SQL
- Execute

To compound matters, we have to do these things each release TIMES 12 as we have that many satellite locations.

I’m just wondering if there are ways to speed/ease all that is needed to get these deploys done.  I played with MSBuild years ago just trying to automate builds to DEV/TEST but came away frustrated (don't know if that could be part of this solution or not).

Thanks.

Msbuild doesn’t copy references (dlls) if using project dependencies in solution

Hi,

i had a look on many similar questions on this side but none of them answered the question to my problem. The whole day i tried to solve this by finding a solution (via google etc.):

I have 4 projects in my VS solution (everyone targeting .net 3.5) - for my problem only these two are important:

 1. MyBaseProject<- this class library references a 3rd party dll (elmah.dll)
 2. MyWebProject1 <- this web application project has a reference to MyBaseProject

I added the elmah.dll reference to MyBaseProject in Visual studio 2008 by clicking "Add reference..." -> "Browse" tab -> selecting the "elmah.dll".

The Properties of the Elmah Reference are as follows:

 - Aliases - global
 - Copy local - true
 - Culture -
 - Description - Error Logging Modules and Handlers (ELMAH) for ASP.NET
 - File Type - Assembly
 - Path - D:\webs\\otherfolder\\_myPath\\__tools\elmah\Elmah.dll
 - Resolved - True
 - Runtime version - v2.0.50727
 - Specified version - false
 - Strong Name - false
 - Version - 1.0.11211.0

In MyWebProject1 i added the reference to Project MyBaseProject by:
"Add reference..." -> "Projects" tab -> selecting the "MyBaseProject". The Properties of this reference are the same except the following members:

 - Description -
 - Path - D:\webs\CMS\MyBaseProject\bin\Debug\MyBaseProject.dll
 - Version - 1.0.0.0

If i run the build in visual studio 2008 the elmah.dll is copied to my MyWebProject1's bin directory, along with MyBaseProject.dll!

However if i clean and run msbuild for the solution (via D:\webs\CMS>C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\MSBuild.exe /t:ReBuild /p:Configuration=Debug MyProject.sln)
the elmah.dll is missing in MyWebProject1's bin directory - although the build itself contains no warning or errors!

I already made sure that the .csproj of MyBaseProject contains the private element with the value "true" (that should be an alias for "copy loca l" in VS):

    <Reference Include="Elmah, Version=1.0.11211.0, Culture=neutral, processorArchitecture=MSIL">
      <SpecificVersion>False</SpecificVersion>
      <HintPath>..\mypath\__tools\elmah\Elmah.dll</HintPath>
        <Private>true</Private>
    </Reference>

(The private tag didn't appear in the .csproj's xml by default, although VS said "copy local" true. I switched "copy local" to false - saved - and set it back to true again - save!)

What is wrong with MSBUILD? How to get the (elmah.dll) reference copied to MyWebProject1's bin?

I do NOT want to add a postbuild copy action to every projects postbuild command! (Imagine i would have many projects depend on MyBaseProject!)

Please help. I get mad on this!

Thanks, tobi

P.S. I'm using Vista32bit with all latest updates, same goes for .net framework 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 (sp1)!

We did lot of window form destop and window service deployments, but these projects are removed in visual studio 2012.  How should we do this now? and what is the purpose of removing these templates?

I've been using install shield in the past, they are license nightmare. I just don't want to go back there again.

VS13 App won't build - no error reported

I just installed VS 13 - I can't get either a console or WPF app to build.  When I try building, the output window shows the build failed, but there are no messages anywhere.  The programs I have tried are simple sample applications similar to"Hello World"

Project file must include the .NET Framework assembly 'WindowsBase, PresentationCore, PresentationFramework' in the reference list.

I've been working on a 3.5 Web Application for a few months now w/o issues, when all of a sudden a few minutes ago, I clicked on 'rebuild' and got this error:
Error 1 Project file must include the .NET Framework assembly 'WindowsBase, PresentationCore, PresentationFramework' in the reference list.

I don't know where it came from and it's odd b/c the project is not and was never a WPF project.  I tried adding the assemblies to get it to build, but that caused an avalanche of xaml and other build errors.  The project looks like it's still configured correctly and I can't figure out what's wrong.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

Deployment Package - Amending File Name

$

Hi

I am looking to use the deployment package functionality of MSBuild to allow automated deployment of applications to a test environment.  The standard tools are working well but I need to make a couple of amendments to fit in with the current deployment infrastructure my company uses.

The issue I am encountering is that the package uses the same file name for each build.  So for each build the zip file is called "<project>.zip" with no other unique identification associated with it.  What I would like to do is assign the build number to the file name so the finished zip file is like "<project>-1.12.23.224.zip".

I have added a *.wpp.targets file to the project and can write a target that gets the build number.  However when I try to redefine the $(PackageFileName) property of MSBuild it makes no difference.

Has anyone done anything similar or knows how to correctly redefine the name of the package that MSBuild produces.

Thanks

Colin

Referencing native dlls in winforms control project

$

Hi,

I'm working on a WinForms control that supports many design mode features and references a lot of (managed) assemblies, some of them being managed C++ wrappers for unmanaged dlls.

When I create a project that uses my control the problems begin.

At runtime I succeeded in loading all dependencies by changing the search paths during control initialization.

But when dragging the control onto a form in design mode, VS copies the control dll without its dependencies to a temporary folder (...AppData...ProjectAssemblies...) that can't be predicted. So my code can't find the dlls and loading fails.

My idea is to tell the project file about all dependencies so VS is able to copy everything to its temporary destination. I researched a bit and found the NativeReference Common MSBuild Project Item and the ResolveNativeReference task. These sound promising but I was not able to find samples I could use.

Can someone tell me if my scenario can be solved and how I should start?

Regards,

Thomas

MSbuild solution platform and configuration

Hi

I have a Visual Studio 2013 C++ solution. I configured it for Win8.1Release|x64 platformonly, and I can build the solution (F7) without any problem.

Now I'm trying to automate the process using msbuild. However, when I run "msbuild myproj.sln" it tries to build it for Win7Debug|Win32.

The project user options file has the following line in it:

<PropertyGroup Condition="'$(Configuration)|$(Platform)'=='Win8.1 Release|x64'">

Nut it seems to be ignored.

I don't see any way to specify Win8.1Release and x64 in the command line parameters.

Please, advise.

Thanks.
